Institutional Research

I chose to research The Conjuring and its distributors, there are 37 in total however some of the companies are world wide, same company different country, these are the distributors:

20th Century Fox,
Columbia TriStar,
Legend Cinemas,
Manfer Films,
New Line Cinema,
Roadshow Film,
Warner Bros. (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, USA).

These are all theatrical, as the film is getting older it has been released on DVD and Blu-ray, here are the distributors for the physical copies:

Warner Home Video (Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, USA).

I have researched further into each distribution company and have looked at all of the major successful films each company has distributed;

20th Century Fox: Avatar, Deadpool, Star Wars, Titanic, Alien Covenant.
Columbia Tristar: Flatliners, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Life, The Shallows.
New Line Cinema: Annabelle, Straight Outta Compton, The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, IT.
Warner Bros: Inception, Chernobyl Diaries, Godzilla, Annabelle: Creation, IT.

For the films which these companies have distributed, it is a large range of genres which have been distributed which constantly changes the target audience, for the horror movies it is mainly the 15-24 and 25-34 year old who seem more interested in watching the films, the genders are split, whereas films such as Star Wars, Spider-Man and Avatar are different, as they are more for the whole family of all ages to watch.

Each company has by itself produced movies and distributed movies, however they are usually in co production with another large company, this doesn't necessarily mean they are leaning on other companies for help as they can then release the film to much larger audiences to make as much money as possible.

New Line Cinema is the company I am looking into the most as they have produced and distributed the most amount of horror films out of them all, New Line Cinema happens to be a subsidiary of Warner Bros. although this does not mean they work together a lot New Line maintains a separate development, production and distribution, but coordinates these functions with Warner bros.
Warner Bros. are a very large company which not only are not only involved in the production of films but in video games, music and television programmes, they have been involved with a lot of hit TV shows such as Arrow, The Big Bang Theory, Gotham etc. Their music group has signed on many famous artists such as Ed Sheeran, Gucci Mane, Jason Derulo, Skrillex and more.

New Line Cinema has gained a very good and popular reputation as they produced the Oscar Award-winning The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, which generated a combined worldwide box office of $3 Billion, this was then followed by a trilogy of films based on The Hobbit, which also generated close to the same amount, even being owned by Warner Bros. New Line Cinema are still doing a great job by themselves.

From the distributors I have researched, the most likely company to be interested would be New Line Cinema as they are the company which are most involved in producing and distributing horror movies, so to continue this trend oh horror movies they could be interested in distributing my company, however the movie is rather mainstream in a sense of an abduction and exorcisms, however it still stands out differently compared to other films such as Lights Out and The Conjuring. New Line Cinema being a large company however would probably not want to distribute a smaller, less known film due to the risk of losing money.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1457767/companycredits?ref_=tt_dt_co#distributors

https://www.warnerbros.com/studio/divisions/new-line-cinema

How will this research affect my ideas?

This research has affected my ideas that researching the different distributors, I have found out that they are all very large and are subsidiaries to Warner Bros. one of the Big Six, New Line Cinema being a subsidiary however is still a very large company which are very independent, looking at the films they have produced and distributed there is a lot of competition and high demand for a good film, especially with the horror movies they have released, each being very successful such as Lights Out and The Conjuring films. From evaluating all of this it has made me realise that for a good movie opening it has to stand out to audiences instantly and it must be different from the popular films out now, but still stick to the typical conventions of a horror. Due to the size of these companies, the audiences they can reach out to are all over the world, therefor I need to make my film opening appeal to all different audiences, it has also opened my eyes to looking into target audiences which I now feel the best age groups would be 15-24 and 25-34 as the horror movies which they have released seem to appeal to these age groups the most.

Sound in trailers

Foley sound is the reproduction of sounds which are added into films or other media in post-production to enhance the audio quality. The idea behind Foley sound is that anything in the picture, any actions or noises which you would expect to hear can be recreated to sound more appealing, realistic and enhanced, these noises can range from anything such as waves hitting the side of a boat, a horse clattering its hooves on the floor to breaking glass, anything can be recreated.

A Foley artist is the person behind all of the recreated noises and sounds you hear in the final production which have been added in, they have a very important role in the post production stage of the film as they can bring the scene to life by enhancing sounds. Foley artists have to be very creative when attempting to recreate sound, for example the artist would watch a scene from a film and would need to recreate a specific noise, a great example would be a horse galloping, the artist could recreate this noise by using coconuts and cloth, clattering them onto concrete, another example would be the noise of someone punching another person, they could either hit a piece of meat or a watermelon. They would have to use so many different things and use different methods just to find the one perfect sound to fit the scene.

Here is a great video which explains how to recreate sounds and the different methods used.

Diegetic sound is any sound presented from the films world, this can be either on screen or off screen, another term for Diegetic sound would be actual sound which we can hear in the real world or all of the current sounds which the characters can hear, whereas Non-Diegetic sound is different as this has been added in post production, it is a sound which the actors would not be able to hear a good example would be music added on top of a scene.

Example of Diegetic are, Dialogue, sounds originating from any object on screen, such as footsteps, sounds which are visible or implied. Examples of Non-Diegetic sounds are added music, narration and any extra sounds added for effect.
A perfect example of Non-Diegetic sound is from the Movie Jaws, in this scene when the shark is swimming towards one of the boys, the very famous and recognisable sound cue plays, this is Non-Diegetic as no one else can hear this apart from the audience, the music begins to intensify as it gets closer to people, adding for effect as the audience can then only assume something bad is going to happen.

To be able to tell the difference between the two, take for example this scene from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the clear Diegetic sounds are Spider-Man jumping on the bed, this is an action and has an expected sound and the sounds from the television, he also plus in some ear phones which play music, this is a Diegetic sound as this is something the character can hear, there are many more in this scene but for Non-Diegetic to start we have the slow piano playing to add emotion, and then the louder, clearer music from his phone which transitions into Non-Diegetic as it becomes clearer for the audience compared to himself as he throws his phone on the floor.

Strauss Narrative and film Trailers

Levi Strauss thought that all narratives are structured around the idea of Binary Opposites, and the conflict between the two, Strauss thought that each film would always have a hero but to counter and challenge this hero a villain is needed, to beg the question does good overpower evil, which opposition is supported by the narrative and triumphs over the other.

There are many Binary opposites such as:

Good vs Evil,
Hero vs Villain,
Human vs Supernatural,
Light vs Dark,
Old vs Young,
Beautiful vs Ugly,
Strong vs Weak,
Rich vs Poor,
Peace vs Conflict.

These are just a few oppositions to be named, there are almost an infinite amount, just thinking of anything it always has an opposite, of course not every film has every opposition, however there are a few very distinct oppositions in films, for example in Superhero films the clear oppositions are Good vs Evil, Hero vs Villain etc. whereas in Horror films an opposition could be Light vs Dark, Human vs Supernatural and in Comedy an example could be Old vs Young.

The Dark Knight is a good example of how the movie uses Binary Opposites as it makes it very clear and obvious that it is about Good vs Evil, the Superhero/Batman vs the Villain/The Joker, in this case being a Superhero film the Hero comes out on top, this is why I didn't want to look at horror movie trailers as a lot of the time the unnatural/supernatural force overcomes the human/good side.

For my film trailer, the genre being a horror I would like there to be a clear Binary Opposite however the good side doesn't win, it is expected that in films the better side will overcome the evil or problem and triumph so instead in the trailer I don't want to give too information away as i'd like there to still be some mystery in the trailer as to who comes out on top.

Propp Narrative and Film Trailers

Vladimir Propp's theory states that in each film there are 8 character types, each has a crucial role in building the text and the story will grow around them.
The 8 characters are:
The Villain,
The Hero,
The Donor,
The Helper,
The Princess,
Her Father,
The Dispatcher,
The False Hero.
Not every film will have a set character type per person, some characters can become more then one character type for example, the Dispatcher and Donor, this character type can send the hero off on a mission whilst giving them something to aid their journey.

Looking at the Harry Potter trailers it is clear to see they use all 8 character types, the Villain being Voldemort, the Dispatcher and Donor being Dumbledore, the Helpers are Ron and Hermione, the Princess is Ginny, the False Hero is Draco Malfoy and the Hero is Harry Potter. This is a very popular film franchise which is built off of Vladimir Propp's character theory.

Barthes Narrative and film Trailers

Barthes Theory states that every movie, soap, poster etc. suggests a mystery to then attempt to draw an audience in to watching it. A good example would be any murder mystery film as in the trailers it will give enough information out to the audience but then leave them asking questions and then become very interested in going to find out what happens.

Due to Murder On The Orient Express being a murder mystery movie, we can apply this theory very easily because throughout the trailer we aren't given much information at all apart from each of the main characters and the supposed protagonist. As a viewer I am instantly drawn into this film, mainly because of not seeing much I am very interested in going to see this film to understand more of the movie.

Todorov Narrative and film Trailers

Todorov's 5 stage theory is very basic however we can apply it to most films, his theory suggests that each film follows these 5 stages:
Equilibrium, this is a normality, everything is as it should be and all life goes on undisturbed.
Disruption, this commonly happens a little way through the film after we establish a normality, the disruption can be anything in the film which effects the main characters such as a murder or a kidnapping.
Recognition, this is when the main characters then recognise the disruption and are aware of the problem.
Attempt to Repair, the main characters will usually do anything in their power to try and solve the problem, for example finding justice for a murder victim.
New Equilibrium, this is when everything then returns to its normal state.
However not every film follows these 5 stages, a lot of films can end up being in a continuous loop between disruption and attempt to repair.

The Insidious trailer does use Todorov's theory, to a certain extent, in which at the beginning of the trailer there is a clear Equilibrium of the family living happily in their home, the clear disruption is when the son falls off of the ladder, here the rest of the trailer is downhill as the haunting begin, the recognition is when the mother hears a voice on the baby monitor and is then scared and runs to help her baby. The attempt to repair is when she then calls on Elise to help them, as the trailer progresses there is no new equilibrium, however more disruptions as there are a lot events which are setting the film up.

We can use this theory in our trailer, to start have everything all normal but then slowly progress through each stage, making the trailer turn into a dark, twisted descent into pure horror, however I do not want to then create a new equilibrium as it can give too much of the movie away, this is why I believe that all film trailers don't show a new equilibrium as it is basically showing the end of the film.

Costumes and Props

We will be having 5 actors each in, black, hooded robe cloaks, we will need them to also wear black trousers or jeans, a black t-shirt and black shoes. What the actors wear underneath the robes isn't as important just as long as it is black clothing. Our female actor will be wearing a white dress, on the dress will be mud and fake blood.

For the props we will need to use a chair/rocking chair for the female actor to sit in, we will also need to use candles and salt to create the pentagram on the floor, then use the candles and place them in each of the corners.

Synergy

Synergy is the continuity of advertisement, for example in films, if a film has a sequel the poster may have the same font style or layout design as the previous film poster, this is to remind the viewer of what they are familiar with. We will use synergy in our trailer by using the same font and colour scheme throughout our trailer, poster and magazine cover.

The Insidious films all maintain the same dark theme throughout all of their posters, they all also have the main characters and an evil force lurking over in the background. The same red colour has been used in each of the posters, either in the SI in Insidious or the number, we can see red as a danger or fear and the white as innocence or purity, speaking of innocence in each poster there is either a child or a child's toy. This is all continued in each poster, this is a great example of synergy, the audience who see the posters for the newer films will be familiar with this style because it is held throughout each poster.

Locations

The old reception for Nenepark Academy is a perfect place to film, this is because the building hasn't been used in over 4 years, it is completely abandoned and we can gain access but we have to receive permission.
Using this location will benefit my film as the idea is all based around a satanic ritual, therefore being all abandoned it looks the part, we can also change everything inside, but because the reception is already trashed, the paint on the walls and the rooms are deteriorating so it definitely looks abandoned and run down, the outside of the building is all overgrown, there are a couple of doors and windows which are boarded up. It brings a lot of horror conventions forward and it looks very stereotypical in films but it is different as it isn't a house and it isn't owned by anybody.
The building is still in the school grounds, so if we are to enter we need permission by the site team, they are the only ones who are allowed to unlock the doors and let us into the building. Since the building is still in the school grounds it is very easy to access it, due to it being within walking distance it is a very convenient location to use.

Image result for IT youll float too poster
The text used is rather small but is very clear, IT is the largest text and is bright red, red connotations are, blood, fire, anger and danger, IT is the monster so it makes sense to use this colour, the text for IT isn't formal, it looks as if a child has used a crayon to draw the words IT. 'You'll float too' is white, the connotations for white are innocence, purity and light, this is used because the main protagonists are young children.

There aren't any star names in this poster, except for the antagonist which is IT, it is also the name of the film.

The tagline 'You'll float too.' is a very powerful tagline, it is very memorable, it is a chilling tagline as the poster implies that it is talking about the children, also it relates to the poster as Pennywise is holding a balloon, which balloons float and he is trying to hand the balloon to the child, the balloon is a metaphor for the tagline, 'You'll float too' as we can guess this means that it is linking with death, your spirit floats out of your body or you float to heaven.

Language and mode of address, the text IT is very sinister looking, telling the audience that the film is a horror, it is also very clear its a horror movie. Due to the text being red 'IT', it can tell the viewer that it is danger.

The key image is an innocent child and the antagonist, Pennywise the clown. From this post it already gives away the narrative and the plot, you can see Pennywise's face in the balloon, he has a very Sinister, a very horrifying face, a clown is a lot of peoples fear, the child who is walking towards the clown is looking up at the balloon and has no idea what lies behind the balloon. Also, it is very clear to see that the clown (Antagonist) is submerged in this darkness/fog, this really hides his identity and lets the audience know this is danger, something submerged in darkness brings in primal fears, darkness and the unknown. The image shows that the child's leg is lifted meaning he is walking towards the balloon even though he has no idea what danger is ahead, it also shows on the floor he looks to be in a street with the puddles on the floor, this could be suggesting that being in the open is safety but entering the darkness results in death.

The narrative suggests that the child in the image will carry on walking towards the figure in the mist and take the balloon, due to children not being so smart and not reading the signs of danger we can assume this will happen to more than one child, but not to adults because there aren't any in this poster.

Due to the child walking towards the balloon, we are then intrigued to find out what will happen next, although it is rather obvious he is in danger and doing this something bad will happen, although since this child is doing this we can only wonder if every other kid in the film will be the same and what kind of danger they will be in.

The visual codes are very clear in this poster, and we can also easily tell this film is associated with horror because, we have a very dark setting, there is a lot of mist and darkness which surrounds one character, we can assume this means that this could be a dark entity or antagonist. The dark balloon instantly gives us the impression this is a horror, it is a bright red balloon, red cane taken as danger, fear etc. but not only that we have a very sinister looking clown behind the balloon, clowns are also a lot of people's fears.

Image result for get out poster
The text is directly under the main image, it is very large and bold, for me this is the second part of the poster I am drawn to, instantly reading the title of the film tells me that this film may be intense, also the main character could be trapped, either held captive or mentally. The whole poster is black and white, black has some very powerful meanings behind it, such as a sense of power, evil, mystery or death, the choice of using this is rather powerful and will give the audience the clear message that the person in the main image isn't free, possibly trapped and afraid.

The only star names which are included on the poster is the director, Jordan Peele, this can draw in an audience who is a fan of his work, Key and Peele, Keanu, these are the most successful pieces of work he is involved in. The company name at the top will definitely draw a large audience in, Blumhouse, the producers of The Visit, Insidious and The Gift, each very successful in attempting to revive the horror genre and bring it back to be a very popular genre to watch.

The film tag line is very memorable and gives a very powerful message. "Just because you're invited, doesn't mean you're welcome." The audience can take this as the main character is "invited" however their fate is uncertain as they aren't "welcome" to wherever they are going.

The main image is an extreme close up of the main characters face, from only the eyes his face around them we can see he looks very stressed and afraid, this is very powerful to an audience member if they don't know anything about the film as we can now understand this film will contain the factors of horror but we don't know what. The main image is his face and we can see he has a black skin tone, his bright white eyes stand out completely.

His face alone intrigues the audience to find out what he is looking at, how terrifying can it be, is it a supernatural force or a person, Get Out also will make us wonder, what will he be trying to get out of, is he held captive or has our main character wondered into somewhere we know he shouldn't be?

The visual codes are very clear, big bold text, a small dark image in the centre, looking at this in a racial perspective, the white completely overpowers the black throughout the whole poster, the white surrounds the black, in the film this could be very important and may give the audience a message about race, potentially that in the film white is more superior to black.

Image result for annabelle poster
The text is at the bottom, both in solid white and red, white being pure, innocent and good, whereas red is associated with danger, power and blood, this could be used as two opposites or two sides of the story, one being a good, friendly side and the other having a dark turn. Also at the top of the poster it mentions about it being in the same universe as The Conjuring, another horror movie which the text is also in red.

The films tagline is "You don't know the real story.", because this is the next chapter after The Conjuring, we can take what we know from that film and apply our knowledge to this film, however this tagline is telling us that what we already know could be all wrong. It intrigues the audience who are interested in this film universe to go watch the film to then expand our knowledge on the film universe.

The main image is very interesting, we can take a lot from it, firstly we can notice that this house which we can assume the little girl lives in is very isolated, it looks to be made out of wood, implying that this film is set a long time ago, the little girl which we can assume is the main character is also holding a very old lamp also pushing the idea its set a while ago. The little girl is dressed in a white dress, so is the doll and this can show innocence and purity which is what we associate with children anyway, she is standing in front of what seems to be a well, begging the question why is she there, could she possibly throw the doll down there or maybe herself? The image is all very gloomy and dull, there isn't any bright colours, the moon is submerged in the clouds, all together this instantly giving off a horror, mystery vibe.
